Grab a leash and get Fido out to Pet Pride Day 2003 with KGO and television's "Laugh-In" legend, JoAnne Worley who is currently starring in American Musical Theatre of San Jose's presentation of On The Twentieth Century. Pet Pride Day takes place at Sharon Meadows in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Highlights include costume and pet-trick contests, doggie dancing, frisbee dogs, and an award ceremony. The event benefits San Francisco Animal Care and Control.

Steve Bartman - Cubs Fan?

OCTOBER 15-- Meet Steve Bartman. He's the poor 26-year-old Chicago Cubs fan who last night got his hands on that foul ball headed for outfielder Moises Alou's mitt. Bartman, who attended the University of Notre Dame, works for a Chicago-area consulting firm and serves as coach for a local youth baseball program. We wanted to speak with Bartman about last night's incident, but he did not return messages left on his office voicemail. And when we dialed Bartman up at his apartment--about three miles from Wrigley Field--we got a recorded message saying that his number had been disconnected. Which is probably not a bad idea. In a statement released this evening, Bartman apologized "from the bottom of this Cubs fan's broken heart." He said that he had his "eyes glued on the approaching ball the entire time and was so caught up in the moment that I did not even see Moises Alou, much less that he may have had a play. Had I thought for one second that the ball was playable or had I seen Alou approaching, I would have done whatever I could to get out of the way and give Alou a chance to make the catch."

Basic Brown Bear Factory Tour

Stuffed animals are a dime a dozen; you can hardly walk through a toy store and avoid the aisles and aisles of furry faces. So why settle for a prefabbed plaything when you can custom-make one yourself? That's the premise behind the Basic Brown Bear Factory Tour at the company's headquarters on DeHaro Street in San Francisco. Follow the bear tracks inside to start the tour, which opens with a story about how the teddy bear got its name. (Spoiler: It's from a 1902 cartoon that showed President Teddy Roosevelt refusing to shoot a bear while hunting, which sparked a nationwide bear craze.) Then you'll be led on a 30-minute walk through the design and manufacturing process. Kids will be entranced by sketches of the bears, and by watching workers cut, sew and stuff the animals using the factory's bright-yellow stuffing machine. The icing on the cake comes at the end -- participants make like factory workers (children included) and choose, stuff and decorate their own bears to take home. The tour is free; however, you must purchase your bear to take it home (one 12-inch bear costs $12).

Cupertino Oktoberfest

We will be at the Cupertino's Oktoberfest celebration, which goes beyond the standard beer tents and accordion music. It includes two full days of German-inspired fun with arts and crafts, music, food and a kids play area. More than 100 artists and craftspeople will be on hand with art, jewelry, holiday crafts and clothing. Although the crafts may not be German in origin, the entertainment stage will feature traditional German polkas and waltzes along with professional Bavarian-style dancers. Bratwurst, pretzels, sauerkraut and Oktoberfest lagers are the perfect accompaniments to accordion oom-pah-pah music. Kids will have their own fun at the Kinderplatz, a special play area. They can try their hands -- and feet -- at the climbing wall or zoom down the giant slide, plus pet animals at the zoo or test their skill at the dunk tank. Each day will also feature a dose of classic chicken dancing.

A Gaetice depressus, right, and its exuviae seem smiling in this undated handout photo from Toba Aquarium in Toba, Mie prefecture, western Japan. An 8-year-old boy picked the Gaetice depressus with about 1.5 cm shell on Aug. 30, 2003 when he went digging for clams at a beach in the prefecture and brought it to the aquarium. Employees at the aquarium doubted first that it was drawn by permanent marker but kept it. Even after the Gaetice depressus exuviated on Sept. 21, 2003, it still has the pattern like smiling clearly and it was proved that the pattern is by nature. The aquarium opened it to public Friday, Sept. 26, 2003.

How angels might see the earth! Camera Obscura, which means "dark room" in Latin, is man's earliest form of photography. Once you're inside this small chamber and your eyes adjust, gaze into the center of the room. You'll see a parabolic dish reflecting external images transmitted through double convex lenses hidden in the ceiling 12 feet above. The scenes on the dish are moving (literally and figuratively) in a 360-degree nonstop rotation, revealing live events from outside. It's a real-time motion picture of sand and sea, surf and surfers, sitters and strollers, sea lions and seagulls -- and even the setting sun (if you're there at sunset, of course).
